Networks of Trust:

Elevating DoD Strategy Through Dialogue and Innovation

TRG helped the DoD build trusted networks across sectors to stay ahead of emerging tech threats. The program fostered innovation, strengthened partnerships, and informed strategic decision-making.

The Challenge:

As the information age accelerated, the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) confronted a complex reality: the technologies shaping global security, economic systems, and political institutions were increasingly developed outside government. DOD recognized that innovation and creativity was no longer the sole province of DARPA, NASA and NOAA, thus with critical infrastructure often residing in private hands, and rapid innovation driven by the commercial sector, the DoD needed new ways to stay ahead of emerging threats—and new voices at the table.

To fulfill its mission, the Department required more than intelligence collection. It needed to build trust with creators and innovators resident in industry and academia, and to open sustained channels of engagement with nontraditional partners. The goal: deepen institutional awareness, stimulate innovation, and ensure the U.S. remained agile in the face of evolving technological frontiers.

Our Role:

The Rendon Group (TRG) designed and delivered a forward-looking research and engagement program to help DoD expand its strategic aperture and operational thinking. At its core, the program convened a cross-disciplinary network of respected leaders from across sectors—business, science, technology, academia and policy—to examine the implications of emerging information technologies on national security, the economy, and society.

TRG facilitated high-level dialogues, structured small-group discussions, and strategic briefings that explored the convergence of technology, governance, and geopolitical change. Through this work, TRG provided DoD with:

Access to leading-edge ideas from nontraditional and independent thinkers;

Curated insight into how new technologies would shape future conflict, diplomacy, and institutional behavior;

A trusted network to support continuous collaboration between public and private sector leaders.

The Outcomes:

The program served as both an innovation catalyst and a trust-building platform. It brought new insights directly into the policy process, helping DoD leaders anticipate the impacts of fast-moving technological change. It also created lasting networks—bridging silos between government, industry, and academia—and laid the foundation for more adaptive, informed decision-making.

In an era where information dominance is as critical as force readiness, TRG helped the Department of Defense strengthen not just its knowledge base, but its strategic partnerships for the future.
